Trevor Kuiper
Owner/dentist for Sioux Center Dental
SIOUX CENTER—Faith, family, service is something of a family motto for Trevor Kuiper and his wife, Kara.
It also is a way of life that he strives to integrate into his work as owner of Sioux Center Dental.
At the office, patients will find Bible verses on the walls and staff members pray at the start of the work day. Staff and patients are treated like family, and staff members go the extra mile to provide patients with quality service.
Kuiper started the dental practice in May 2018.
It was a busy time in his life, Kuiper recalled. He and his wife had just moved to town, had a new baby and opened the clinic, all in about two months.
Growing up in Sheldon, Kuiper at first thought he would go into the medical field rather than dentistry.
In high school, he began doing some job shadowing, when his dentist who worked in Spencer encouraged Kuiper to come and job shadow him.
“I found there was a lot more to this than I thought,” Kuiper said. “It was a lot of fun to see what he was capable of doing.”
After graduating from Northwestern College in Orange City, he went to the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in Iowa 2009-13. He graduated from there and went to practice as an associate dentist with a dentist in Parkston, SD.
He was there for five years before he decided to do something on his own.
“Thankfully, my wife is an accountant, so that helps a lot, having someone to run the numbers and know the business side of things,” Kuiper said. “We were able to build the practice together and we work together. She does all the numbers and financing and all that stuff. It’s definitely a team effort on that front.”
One of the early challenges to opening his own practice was finding a suitable place in Sioux Center.
Once that was tackled came the challenge of patiently building a reputation and clientele, working hard to deliver the best care to every patient.
Dealing with insurance and other paperwork is another daily challenge. As important as it is, it is not his favorite part of the job; rather, he looks forward to interacting with the patients and serving them.
As he continues to establish himself as a dentist and small business owner in Sioux Center, Kuiper looks forward to expanding his business, including adding another dentist.
