"Stomach acid has an incredibly high, high potency" and can have a "very detrimental impact to your oral health". -Dr. Kuiper
Today, we will continue to discuss how things that affect your overall health also affect your oral health. Today’s topic happens to be on eating disorders. There are a few different eating disorders that have an impact on your overall well-being but also have a detrimental impact on your oral health. Typically, the one that we see the most and has the most risk of damage related to oral health is from bulimia. Bulimia, or throwing up after eating, strips your teeth very quickly due to the acid introduced to the mouth. Even when rinsed with water immediately afterward, the harmful effects can be detrimental. The enamel is worn away on the back side of the upper front teeth, the front side of lower front teeth and chewing surfaces on the back teeth. The yellow dentin is exposed and the teeth become more sensitive and are more likely to develop decay, crack, or break. All of these things can create many problems in a very short amount of time since stomach acid is so powerful! We like to prevent those issues ahead of time. We are here to help and aid you in getting treatment for eating disorders if necessary. If you’ve already had success taking care of the source of the problem, we would like to help rebuild what is there in your mouth. We have many options but would love to discuss your goals with you for a healthy and restored smile.
Please give our office a call so that we can answer any questions and help you achieve the healthy smile that you desire.
