Wisdom Teeth

January 14, 2020 Kara Kuiper

Today Dr. Kuiper will be answering all of your questions about wisdom teeth! Do all wisdom teeth need to come out? When should your child have them taken out? Watch and find out!

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that people typically get between the ages of 18 and 24 years old. The problem with wisdom teeth is that they are a bit different than what their name suggests! They typically come in sideways, upside down, or get stuck about halfway through on the back side of your second molars. Unfortunately, if the teeth don’t come in correctly or get stuck, it can actually lead to long term issues with your jaw, misalignment of teeth, or weakening of the bone support for the other teeth. This can also create a food trap and potentially create cavities on otherwise healthy teeth in the mouth. We recommend getting wisdom teeth removed if they aren’t coming in correctly or if there is not enough room in the mouth for the wisdom teeth to properly erupt. Dr. Kuiper also recommends having wisdom teeth removed early on in the process. Having wisdom teeth removed at a younger age, allows for quicker healing, versus at an older age it can become a bit more invasive and certainly creates a longer healing process.
