Fluorosis

Do you have white or brown spots on your teeth? Have you ever wondered what those are and where they came from? Listen in to today’s Tuesday Tooth Talk as Dr. Kuiper explains what could be going on and how to fix them!

Fluorosis, or white and brown spots on your teeth, happens as your teeth are developing and extra fluoride from water or toothpaste is ingested. This leads to increased hardening of the teeth to the point where the teeth actually become whiter, although there can sometimes be a brown or yellow spot as well. That is called fluorosis, and those spots are not decay. In fact, those areas are actually harder than the rest of your teeth and more decay resistant. However, they are not as pretty or aesthetically pleasing as normal teeth.

In cases where fluorosis causes unappealing appearance to the teeth, there are treatments that can be done to minimize or eliminate the appearance of the fluorosis. Some of those options include bonding tooth-colored filling material over the area, or ceramic veneers covering the whole front of the tooth.
