Pregnancy & Oral Health
In honor of Mother’s Day, we want to kickoff a special edition of videos to celebrate moms! New moms, (and even seasoned moms) may have questions about how pregnancy is related to their own oral health. How does pregnancy affect oral health? Can pregnancy ruin teeth? Can a tooth infection hurt my baby? Are x-rays safe when I am pregnant? So many questions and all because we care about the health of our babies! We’re going to shed some light on how pregnancy and oral health are connected.
Pregnancy and oral health are very intimately intertwined but there are many misconceptions. Pregnancy, as you know, causes a range of changes in the body, including in the gums and teeth. Pregnancy will not steal calcium from the teeth or cause weakening of the teeth. The hormone changes, however, can cause the gums to bleed or cause the teeth to become more sensitive. Our recommendation is to maintain your oral health and keep it in the best possible condition while you’re pregnant. The new digital x-ray technology that we have at Sioux Center Dental is very safe while pregnant. We still recommend completing fillings and other dental procedures while pregnant because this will help maintain your oral health! By doing nothing, this puts your teeth at risk for infection which, while unlikely, can affect the health of the baby. We really want to avoid putting the baby at risk for any complications!
